Overview

• Role: RN (Registered Nurse)
• Specialty/Unit: 21 Tower Med/Tele, MedSurg/TELE
• Location: Houston, Texas
• Facility: Baylor St Lukes Medical Center
• Shift: Nights, 12-hour shifts
• Contract length: 6 weeks

Unit Details

• Unit size: 28 beds
• Patient ratio: 1:5 goal, can flex to 1:6 depending on staffing
• Charge nurse: Available on all shifts and takes a smaller assignment
• Nurse aides: Goal is 3 per shift, usually 2
• Floating: Travelers are first to float to other MedSurg acuity areas

Required Qualifications

• BLS
• Strong IV start skills
• 2 years Medsurg/Tele experience
• Ability to read and interpret tele
• Open to floating
• Experience with cardiac drips
• EOW required

Preferred Qualifications

• ACLS
• NIHSS
• Strong MedSurg background
• Positive attitude
• Experience with occasional trachs
• Prior travel experience
• Experience working in a very busy hospital

Clinical Setting

• High-demand, high-acuity unit
• Pulmonary patients including cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, liver patient overflow, sickle cell, geriatrics with active sickness, high fall risk, and MedSurg patients with high needs
• Common titratable/set-rate drips include heparin, amiodarone, and blood transfusions
• RT support includes nasal cannula, CPAP, BiPAP home regimen, and occasional trachs

Scheduling and Policies

• Manager makes the schedule
• No self-scheduling
• 12-hour shifts, clock in at 6:38 and clock out at 7:15
• Holidays follow core staff rotation
• PTO is not accepted from 12/10 through the first week in January
• No call or standby requirement

Orientation and Other Notes

• Unit orientation is 2 days
• Teal scrubs
• Must be able to read tele; monitor techs are on a different unit
• Relias EKG exam is taken prior to orientation start
• Daily parking is $15+/day; monthly parking pass options range from $95 to $120
