Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Specialty: Registered Nurse (MS/Tele - 4N Surgical Unit)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit: 4N, a 46-bed surgical unit
- Patient population includes trauma surgery, post bariatric surgery, post abdominal surgery, post amputation surgery, urological issues, and overflow medically and cardiac patients
Work Schedule
- Shift: 3x12 hour day shifts
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Call Requirement: None
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
Experience & Requirements
- Required Specialty Experience: Minimum 1 year (first-time travelers accepted)
- Prior travel experience: Not required
- Locals not accepted; must live at least 50 miles away from the facility
Certifications Required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
- NIHSS (NIH Stroke Scale Certification) - Required for all RNs, to be completed through BlueCloud
Documentation & Compliance Requirements
- Background check covering last 7 years and all states lived/worked in, required within 90 days of start
- Education verification or copy of diploma/transcripts required
- Physical exam required
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (2-step PPD or Qgold accepted; T-Spots not accepted)
- TB questionnaire required prior to start and annually thereafter
- Immunizations or titers required for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
- Varicella
- Drug testing: Negative 12-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, cannabinoids, MDMA, methamphetamines, buprenorphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, cocaine, methadone, tramadol, benzodiazepines, morphine/opiate)
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required prior to start and documentation on file by 12/15
- COVID vaccine exemption allowed with medical or religious documentation
Additional Notes
- Patient-to-nurse ratios typically 1:5-6, can increase to 1:7 during call-ins
- New travelers are onboarded weekly to help reduce workload
- PCT support hiring process underway
- Charting system: Cerner
- Facility requires a clear, passport-style photo for badge
- Candidates must complete facility-specific modules (~8-10 hours) prior to start; paid for completion
- Confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement required before start
This position is ideal for RNs with at least 1 year of experience in medical-surgical or telemetry nursing who are comfortable with surgical patient populations and flexible scheduling. Prior travel experience is not required.
