Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Facility: Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet Hospital
Unit: 9E PCU Neuroscience Main Hospital


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Shift: 3x12 hour nights (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM), holidays as needed
  • Patient Ratios: 1:3 to 1:4 depending on acuity
  • Weekend Requirement: 4-5 weekend shifts per 4-week period as needed
  • On-call: No on-call requirements
  • Floating: Clinician may float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks

Experience & Licensing Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 1 year PCU/Stepdown experience required
  • License: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required
  • First-timers: Accepted

Certifications Required

  • BLS: American Heart Association (AHA) only
  • ACLS: AHA only, required for PCU and other adult critical care units
  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for ER and as applicable
  • Other Certifications:
    • PALS (if working in pediatric units)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) as required (not required for ER RNs)
    • Additional certifications as per unit-specific requirements

Scheduling & Attendance

  • Block scheduling may be accommodated with manager approval and unit needs
  • Locals within 60 miles may be accepted on a case-by-case basis
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Travelers follow the same attendance policy as permanent staff
  • Weekend callouts require makeup shifts within 7-10 days
  • Holiday callouts require a doctor’s note and are considered for cancellation

  • Beds: 820 staffed beds
  • Charting System: EPIC
  • Scrub Color: Solid Royal Blue or White top with Royal Blue bottoms
  • Parking: Permit required with a $20 registration fee for garage parking; additional fees may apply for other locations
  • Hurricane Season: June through November; travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during this time

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

Background Checks & Verifications

  • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • Required searches include SSN trace, statewide, national criminal, sex offender registry, FACIS 3
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification required; diploma/transcripts accepted as placeholders if needed
  • NURSYS verification required for all RNs
  • Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers

Health & Immunization

  • Physical exam updated annually, attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form required
  • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters if low titer
  • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
  • Drug screen: 10-panel urine drug screen within 90 days of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30)
  • COVID-19 vaccine highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated

Certifications & Competencies

  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start
  • Competency exams as applicable to unit (e.g., OR competency if applicable)

Facility Specific

  • Orientation modules must be completed prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
  • Clear, passport-style photo required for badge (frontal view, solid light background, business attire)
  • Facility-specific physical assessment required for Sterile Processing Techs
  • Radiation badge required for certain specialties (not applicable for this RN role unless specified)

  • Travelers must upload all required documentation into the facility’s system prior to start
  • Attendance and compliance with facility policies are strictly enforced
  • Travelers should be aware of potential emergency assignments during hurricane season
