Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery (Contract)

Unit: Labor & Delivery


Position Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to patients and their families in the Labor & Delivery unit. Utilize nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive care delivery.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver care based on Relationship Centered Care and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team on care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
  • Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Role model Relationship Centered Care practices (e.g., Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding).
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
  • Address patient/family concerns and escalate as needed.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety.
  • Participate in quality improvement and evidence-based practice initiatives.
  • Engage in peer and institutional review processes.
  • Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
  • Escalate safety hazards according to protocol.
  • Document nursing practice to support quality and performance improvement.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management with leadership.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
  • Use cost-effective approaches to patient care resources.
  • Document accurately in compliance with regulatory and legal standards.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
  • Maintain a professional image and communicate with compassion and respect.
  • Apply ethical principles in decision-making.

Requirements

  • Current New York State RN License
  • Minimum 2 years RN experience
  • Minimum 2 years Labor & Delivery experience required
  • BLS, ACLS, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications required
  • EPIC experience highly preferred
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred; Associate degree considered with relevant experience or active BSN matriculation
  • Travel experience preferred but not required for Per Diem positions

Unit Details

  • Average Unit Census: 12 patients
  • Unit Beds: 18
  • Staffing Ratio: 1-2 patients per nurse
  • Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (3x12)

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
