Registered Nurse (RN) - Outpatient - Contract

Location: New York, NY
Employment Type: Contract
Shift: 9 AM – 5 PM (No weekends)
Hours: Approximately 37.5 hours per week (3 shifts of 12 hours noted, but actual shift is 9 AM–5 PM)
Contract Length: 9 weeks


Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality ambulatory care nursing based on nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice to a designated patient population in an outpatient setting.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver nursing care using Relationship Centered Care principles and the nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs, applying critical thinking in care management.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to develop, implement, and evaluate care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, discharge planning, and delegation.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, disease prevention, and transitions of care.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Role model patient-centered care practices such as bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, medication review, and discharge wrap-up.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand and improve patient perceptions of care.
  • Initiate service recovery and escalate patient/family concerns appropriately.
  • Demonstrate empathy, respect, compassion, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and escalate safety concerns.
  • Apply clinical skills essential to quality and safety in the patient population served.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
  • Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors and maintain a safe environment.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance improvement initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management to ensure adequate resources for patient care.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages as needed.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
  • Document in compliance with regulatory and legal standards.

Professional Development

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
  • Maintain a professional image and communicate with caring, respect, and empathy.
  • Incorporate ethical principles into decision-making.
  • Engage in lifelong learning, scholarship, inquiry, and innovation.
  • Participate in shared decision-making through specialty councils and committees.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Minimum 2 years of ambulatory care nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Experience in an outpatient setting
  • Minimum 2 years of cardiology experience
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Proficient IV skills
  • Experience in charge nurse roles
  • Knowledge and application of quality improvement principles
  • Adherence to high reliability principles in clinical practice
