Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical/Telemetry

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Details

• Shift: Night (7 PM - 7 AM)
• Hours: 36 hours per week guaranteed; option to pick up additional hours PRN
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Call Requirement: None
• Float Requirement: As needed to similar medical surgical departments
• Holiday Time Off: No holiday requests allowed; dates may be discussed with manager based on unit staffing

Unit & Patient Information

• Night shift nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6
• No LPNs on night shift
• Charge nurse duties vary depending on staffing (charge nurse may take 3 to 6 patients)
• Patient diagnoses commonly include:

  • Pneumonia
  • Heart Failure
  • GI Bleed
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Altered Mental Status (AMS)
  • Sepsis

Required Experience & Skills

• Specialty: Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical/Telemetry
• Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years in specialty
• Additional Experience:

  • At least 1 year of Medical Surgical experience
  • Medical Surgical/Telemetry experience required
• Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers allowed
• Electronic Medical Record: Epic experience required

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Michigan
• BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
• Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., TNCC, PALS, NRP)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search back to age 18
• E-Verify required
• Government-issued photo ID required
• Education verification (copy of highest degree or diploma)
• Physical exam within 1 year of start
• Drug testing: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start
• Immunizations and health documents required:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (proof of at least one prior Tdap vaccine)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray as applicable
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
  • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
  • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (medical/spiritual) required for candidates starting after November 1
• Fingerprinting (Michigan LARA) required within 45 days of start for certain positions; tracking only for this role
• Completion of facility-specific documents such as Code of Conduct, Appearance Standards Policy, and others prior to start

Additional Notes

• Night shift ratios and charge nurse responsibilities may vary based on staffing levels
• Holiday time off requests are generally not approved but may be discussed
• Candidates must complete a skills checklist annually for the applicable unit
• One professional reference from a supervisor or manager is required
• Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps

Requirements / Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan
• Minimum 1 year of Telemetry experience within the last year
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Experience with Epic electronic medical record system
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Certifications (as applicable or required):

  • CHEMO (Chemotherapy)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring)
  • ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
• Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement completion required
