Registered Nurse – MedSurg Step-Down Unit (MSDU)

Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Patient Ratio: 1:5 to 1:7

Unit Overview

• Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) – critical care step-down unit with 26 beds
• Provides specialized care for adult acute care patients requiring more than general med-surg care
• Patients monitored continuously with pulse-oximetry and telemetry
• Care includes airway management, acute BiPAP support, arterial and central lines, titrated IV infusions
• Multi-disciplinary team approach with emphasis on vigilance and compassionate care

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in New York
• Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Additional Requirements

• Must live within a 75-mile radius of Rochester (locals accepted)
• First-time travelers accepted (prior travel experience not required)

Compliance & Onboarding Requirements

• Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
• 7-year criminal background check (felony checks) within 3 months of start
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 3 months of start, updated monthly
• Education verification from primary source (required unless CNA)
• Physical exam within 1 year, updated annually
• Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually (specific mask types required)
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, with annual TB questionnaire if applicable
• Immunizations or proof of immunity for:

  • Rubeola (Measles)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Hepatitis B
  • Varicella
• Drug screening within 30 days of start
• Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination during flu season
• Snellen eye exam within 1 year (not required annually)
• COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required

Documentation & Verification

• Employment application and work history verification (minimum 2 past employments)
• References (2 within last 3 years) required for agency submission only
• Annual skills checklist and competency exams as required by profession
• State-specific background checks and registry verifications as applicable

Facility & Work Environment

• Tertiary care hospital setting with 528 staffed beds
• Scrub color: navy and white combinations allowed
