Job Opportunity: Oncology Registered Nurse

Location: San Francisco, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 14 weeks


Job Details

  • Worksite includes multiple facilities; ability to float to other locations is required.
  • Shifts: 12-hour rotating day/night shifts
    • Day shift: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM (3 shifts per week)
    • Night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM (3 shifts per week)
  • Total hours per week: 36

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Minimum 2 years of oncology experience, including oncology experience within the last year
  • Experience in an inpatient setting
  • Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Chemotherapy certification from ONS or ONCC

Preferred Qualifications

  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) credential

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Current and valid government-issued photo ID matching professional license (e.g., driver’s license, state ID, or US passport)
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year criminal history (including specific Bay Area counties regardless of residence)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
    • Education verification or copy of diploma/transcript
    • Sex offender search as required
  • Employment application with detailed 7-year work history; gaps of 30+ days must be explained
  • Work history verification for 7 years (attestations considered only if multiple verification attempts fail; not accepted for most recent employment)
  • Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually
  • Two supervisory references required (clinical or non-clinical as applicable)

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start including physician’s statement of fitness to work
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start (specific approved mask models required); onsite fit testing available as last resort
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine within 10 years (no declinations accepted except medical exemptions)
    • Two negative TB tests required (one within 1 year, second within 3 months of start) or chest X-ray if positive TB history
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: IGG titer or 2 vaccines required
    • Hepatitis B: titer, series, or declination (declination must be signed within 1 year)
    • Varicella: IGG titer or 2 vaccines required (history of disease not accepted)
  • Drug testing: Standard 9-panel (excluding THC) within 30 days of start; must be negative and re-run every 2 years
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or facility-specific declination required during flu season (Nov-Apr)
  • COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended but not required as of current policy
  • Annual TB questionnaire required within 30 days of start or if TB documentation is expiring

Training and Competency Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam with passing score of 80% or higher within 1 year of start
  • Unit-specific competency exam with passing score of 80% or higher within 12 months of start
  • Core training parts I, II, and III with passing scores of 80% or higher, completed within 1 year prior to start and updated annually
  • Pass/fail Telemetry exam required on first day for nurses working in specified units (includes critical care, emergency, telemetry, and others)
  • Acknowledgement of pass/fail testing required for all RNs
  • UCSF-specific learning modules must be completed before Day 1 for Tuesday starts; other start days complete during orientation

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must complete a COVID-19 questionnaire no earlier than the Monday prior to start date
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) may be required depending on unit assignment
  • Parking and uniform policies must be reviewed and acknowledged prior to start
  • Respirator medical evaluation questionnaire required for certain departments or if fit testing onsite is approved
  • Wage Benefit Parity form required for all clinical and non-clinical candidates under specific profiles
