Job Opportunity: Medsurg/Oncology Registered Nurse (RN)

Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Medsurg/Oncology RN to work on a 31-bed unit specializing in adult and geriatric patients, including oncology patients receiving chemotherapy. The unit also cares for stroke patients (acute but not thrombectomies), and patients with diagnoses such as hypertension, COPD, cellulitis, CHF, atrial fibrillation (non-RVR), chest pain, post-MI, AMS/behavioral issues, and surgical overflow (excluding joint or cranial surgeries).


Work Environment & Schedule

  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • Days: 1:4-5
    • Nights: 1:5-6
  • Shifts: 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM and 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday requirement: As needed
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Floating: May float to other MedSurg units, occasional ER hold; no mom/baby float
  • Orientation: 1-2 shifts of unit-specific orientation on the floor
  • Dress code: No specific scrub color required
  • Scheduling: Manager sets schedule; block scheduling considered if unit needs are met

Patient Care & Responsibilities

  • Core staff to administer chemotherapy (oncology provider not on site during the day)
  • RNs are required to titrate drips (e.g., Lasix, Heparin; Lasix experience preferred but not required)
  • Experience with trach and BiPAP preferred but not required; RNs troubleshoot BiPAP and manage stable trachs with blow-by oxygen
  • RNs do not interpret EKG strips; monitor techs handle strip reading
  • Charge nurse available on each shift as a resource, usually no assignment unless staffing requires
  • Nurse aides/patient care techs present with a ratio of 1:8
  • Tele/monitor techs available on unit

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license in North Dakota
  • BLS Certification required
  • NIHSS certification required
  • Experience: Open to first-time travel nurses; preferred experience with trach and BiPAP
  • Prior travel experience: Not required

Additional Notes

  • Great unit culture and teamwork; family-oriented environment
  • Candidates must not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI or Dignity) within a 50-mile radius
  • Return to onsite (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start
