Job Opportunity: PCU Registered Nurse

Location: Overland Park, Kansas
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
  • Patient-to-nurse ratio: 1:5
  • Float Pool Position: No home unit assignment; float between approximately 5 Med/Surg Intermediate/PCU units and other metro campuses as needed
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday, Saturday, Sunday combination)
  • Holiday shifts and Charge RN assignments as needed
  • On-call: Not required
  • Block schedule accommodation: Not available
  • Local candidates: Not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: No more than 7 days off between shifts
  • Guaranteed hours: Minimum 3 shifts per 13 weeks

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Kansas
  • Minimum 1 year of recent Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Experience in pre/post cardiac catheterization care
  • Experience managing renal failure patients
  • Experience providing COVID care
  • Skills in sheath removal
  • Proficient in blood product administration
  • Experience with central line care and management

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches, sex offender registry, and international searches if applicable
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree (no pending at start)
  • NURSYS license verification (for Missouri licenses)
  • Unit-specific competency exams including:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency (minimum 80% pass rate)
    • Unit-specific skills checklist (including oncology if applicable)
  • Color blindness test within 12 months of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask (N95) testing and annual renewal required
  • Drug screening within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination (required every 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (2-step PPD or equivalent)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season (Sept-April)
  • Facility-specific documents:
    • HIPAA Acknowledgement
    • Latex Allergy Questionnaire
    • Confidentiality Form
    • Regulatory Compliance Education (annual quiz with 80% pass)
    • TB Questionnaire (annual)
    • Hand Hygiene, Fingernail, and Dress Code Policies acknowledgment
    • Badge photo (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months)
  • Employment application and two professional references (supervisors preferred, references must be from same discipline)

Additional Notes

  • This is a float pool position requiring flexibility to work across multiple units and campuses within the metro area.
  • Candidates must be able to work 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule and be available for holiday shifts and charge nurse duties as needed.
  • No pending licenses accepted; must have active RN license at start.
  • No local candidates accepted; must reside at least 75 miles away from the facility.
  • No on-call or block scheduling options.
  • Candidates must comply with all background checks, immunizations, and competency requirements prior to start.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic PCU environment with a variety of patient care experiences including telemetry and neuro stepdown care. It is ideal for RNs with solid Med/Surg and telemetry skills who are flexible and enjoy floating between units.
