Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Opportunity

Location: Bloomington, Indiana

Unit & Patient Population

  • Mixed Acuity Unit: Comfortable working from ICU to some PCU ratios
  • Patient Ratios:
    • AA Ratios 1:3-4 (very rare)
    • ICU Ratios 1:2
  • CVICU patient population includes:
    • Cardiovascular surgery and thoracic surgery patients (CABG, TAVR, SAVR, MVR, VATS)
    • Flex acuity of Med/Surg, Progressive, and ICU cardiovascular and oncology patients
  • Patient Diagnoses: Cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery, cardiology, endocrine, oncology
  • Unit Details: All private rooms with overhead lifts, telemetry monitoring

Experience & Requirements

  • Minimum Experience: 18 months
  • First Time Travelers: Accepted
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: Yes, within scope to meet facility needs
  • Locals: Not accepted
  • Pending License: Not accepted; must have Indiana state license and required certifications in hand before start
  • Holiday Work: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays

Shift & Hours

  • Guaranteed Hours:
    • 8 and 10 hour shifts totaling 40 hours/week
    • 3 shifts of 12 hours = 36 hours/week
    • 4 shifts of 12 hours = 48 hours/week
  • Block scheduling: To be discussed

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI acceptable
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI acceptable
  • NIH Stroke Certification preferred
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., CHEMO, PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM)

Clinical Skills & Special Requirements

  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Post cardiac surgery care (direct or indirect from OR)
  • Management of CABG, TAVR/TAVI, SAVR, MVR, VATS patients
  • Arterial line management
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line and PICC line care/management
  • Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • Preferred skills:
    • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
    • Pre/Post Cardiac Cath/intervention care
    • Sheath removal
    • Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD, RVAD, Impella)
    • Ventilator management and care of ventilated patients
  • Previous charge nurse experience preferred

Licensing & Documentation Requirements

  • Indiana RN license required, verified online within 30 days before start
  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
  • Background checks including 7-year history, national sex offender, FACIS Level III, education verification
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (approved respirators only)
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations)
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations)
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap preferred but not required
    • Flu vaccination/documentation required during flu season (no declinations accepted)
  • TB testing: Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Competency exams: Medication/pharmacology test, unit competency exam, color blind testing

Additional Notes

  • IU Health will not allow Indiana RNs to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR RNs, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS)
  • Must complete facility-specific documents and orientation packets prior to start
  • Must provide minimum of 2 references from recent employment with supervisory titles
  • Skills checklist required annually and within 12 months of start

This position is ideal for RNs with cardiovascular ICU experience who are comfortable managing complex cardiac patients and working in a mixed acuity environment.
