Registered Nurse - Ambulatory Surgery (Contract)

Location: New York, NY
Employment Type: Contract
Shift: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday
Hours: 7.5 hours/day, 37.5 hours/week
Contract Length: 9 weeks


Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to patients in an ambulatory surgical unit. Deliver care based on nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice while collaborating with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care principles and the nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs, applying critical thinking in care management.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to develop, implement, and evaluate care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
  • Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Role model patient-centered care practices such as bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, and medication reviews.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand and improve patient perceptions of care.
  • Initiate service recovery and escalate patient/family concerns appropriately.
  • Demonstrate empathy, respect, and active listening in all interactions.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
  • Follow institutional protocols to escalate safety hazards or gaps in best practices.
  • Document nursing care accurately to support quality and performance improvement.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management to ensure adequate resources.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages as needed.
  • Promote cost-effective patient care practices.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert level.
  • Maintain a professional image and communicate with respect and empathy.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
  • Minimum 2 years of Ambulatory Surgery nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Operating Room (OR) experience
  • Medical-Surgical nursing experience
  • Experience with Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model
  • Demonstrated participation in shared decision-making processes
  • Proven involvement in process improvement initiatives

Additional Information

  • Prior travel nursing experience is required for travel positions (minimum 1 year travel experience); not required for per diem roles.
  • Schedule is 5 days per week, 9 AM to 5 PM.
