Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Family Birthing Center (Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby)

Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

Seeking experienced Labor and Delivery nurses for a travel contract in a Family Birthing Center setting. The unit handles approximately 70-80 births per month, including twin deliveries and preterm patients (35 weeks and above). The unit includes Labor & Delivery rooms, Mother/Baby couplet rooms, a small NICU for newborn stabilization, and an OR suite for C-sections.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience (preferably 3 years in this setting)
• Active California RN license
• Certifications:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring
• Must have at least 1 year of LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) experience
• Comfortable with Neonatal Resuscitation at delivery (no in-house pediatric coverage)
• Experience with OR circulating preferred if only L&D experience; candidates with only postpartum experience will not be accepted
• Ability to titrate drips such as Pitocin and occasionally insulin

Unit Information

• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Labor: 1:2, 1:1 during delivery
  • Mother/Baby couplets: 1:4
• Charge nurse or nurse shift manager present on every shift (may take patient assignment if needed)
• No CNAs on unit; one OB Tech scheduled each shift
• OB physician in-house 24/7
• Anesthesia on-call with 20-minute response time; in-house when epidurals are administered
• Respiratory Therapist attends every delivery and manages respiratory equipment as needed (ventilators, CPAP, bubble CPAP)
• No Tele/Monitor Techs on unit; nurses monitor fetal heart rhythms using GE fetal monitors
• Electronic Fetal Monitoring system: Fetalink
• Patients receiving general anesthesia are recovered in the main PACU

Scheduling & Other Requirements

• Weekend shifts: 2 per 4-week schedule (Friday/Saturday nights, Saturday/Sunday days)
• Holiday shifts rotate with core staff
• May be placed on-call/standby during scheduled shifts with a 30-minute callback expectation
• Floating to other Sacramento area facilities may be required
• Scheduling provided 4 weeks in advance
• 12-hour night shifts every other week

Additional Notes

• Candidates must not have been employed by certain affiliated health systems within the last 12 months
• Two supervisory references required at time of submission (one within 12 months, one within 3 years)
• Unit follows AWHONN guidelines for staffing ratios but does not strictly adhere to them
