Facility Overview

• Location: Phoenix, AZ
• Facility Size: 607 beds
• Trauma Level: Level 1 Trauma Center
• Teaching Hospital with nursing students
• Specialty services: Lung, Liver, Kidney Transplants; affiliated with Barrow Neuro Institute (#1 neuro institute)
• Annual patient volume: ~88,000 patients/year, 250-300 patients/day
• Common diagnoses: Trauma, Burns; Pediatric patients transferred out
• Psych holds: 30-40

Unit Details

• Unit: Emergency Department (ED) / Trauma
• Beds: Acute - 36, Subacute - 54, Trauma bays - 6 (no travelers assigned here)
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
• Charge Nurses: 2 (light patient load or task assignments)
• Nurse Aides: 4 Patient Care Technicians (sitters)
• Telemetry monitors: Phillips (must be able to read strips)
• Ventilators managed by Respiratory Therapy (RT)
• RT coverage: 24/7
• Pharmacy coverage: 24/7, Pharmacist in ER 10 hours/day
• Hospitalists/Intensivists: Minimum 2 MDs on site, up to 8; midlevels and anesthesia support available
• IV Team: Core RNs are US trained

Shifts & Scheduling

• Shift options: 7a-7p, 7p-7a, 11a-11p, 1p-1a
• Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per month (unit discretion)
• Floating: Within the ER and between 4 facilities (main campus, Westgate, and 2 freestanding ERs ~30 minutes apart)
• Orientation: 2-3 shifts floor-specific orientation
• Contract length: Minimum 13 weeks

Requirements & Qualifications

• Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years CORE experience in specialty (ER)
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required (minimum 1 year preferred; will screen candidates with 8+ months)
  • Previous travel experience required for ED or Neuro ICU
• Certifications:

  • Required: BLS, ACLS, PALS (ENPC not accepted as PALS replacement)
  • Preferred: TNCC, ATCN
• EMR: Cerner experience required (must be noted on resume with recency)
• Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam:

  • Must pass 24-48 hours prior to acceptance
  • Maximum 2 attempts allowed; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region
• Orientation Day 1: Pass/fail exam and SIMs Lab (Foley catheter insertion, central line dressing changes, lifts, restraints, wound care)
• Appearance:

  • No facial piercings
  • Natural hair colors only (no unnatural colors)
  • Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
• Travel Teams:

  • Must have own vehicle
  • Cannot work multiple contracts simultaneously within this system
• Other:

  • Must be off CommonSpirit as permanent staff for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
  • No first-time travelers accepted
  • 50-mile radius rule applies for candidate submissions

Additional Notes

• Float policy allows mid-shift floating between 4 facilities within ~30 minutes distance
• SIMs Lab is pass/fail; sterile field competency is critical
• Day 1 pass/fail exam study guide provided
• Candidates may be expected to work with nursing students
• Night shift parking assigned to garage; day shift parking assigned to lot with shuttle service
• Psych holds average 30-40 patients
• 12-hour night shifts with 4 total weekend shifts per 4 weeks, including 2 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's)

This position is ideal for experienced ER RNs with trauma and Cerner EMR experience who meet the strict credentialing and appearance requirements and are comfortable working in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
