Job Opportunity: Step-Down Registered Nurse
Location: Auburn, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Overview
- Work a day shift schedule: 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM), totaling 48 hours weekly
- Patient ratio approximately 1:4-5
- Unit focuses on step-down care for patients with:
- Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
- Post heart catheterization and vascular procedures
- Respiratory failure requiring BiPAP/CPAP/Vapotherm
- Cardiac dysrhythmias
- Responsibilities include post-procedure monitoring, frequent vital signs and neurovascular checks, and use of medication systems such as Pyxis
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
- Minimum 2 years of recent Cardiac Step-Down nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience in dysrhythmia management
- Experience with PICC line management
- Experience with cardiac drip titration
- Experience managing BiPAP/CPAP therapy
- Step-down nursing experience
Competency & Testing Requirements
- Pass a telemetry assessment (minimum 80%) on the first day of orientation covering cardiac rhythm interpretation, arrhythmia recognition, and clinical interventions
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
- Skills checklist required
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam completed within 12 months prior to start, signed by a licensed provider confirming ability to perform job duties
- Fit mask test within 12 months, updated annually (approved mask types specified)
- Immunizations and screenings:
- TDAP vaccine within last 10 years or declination
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (with annual TB questionnaire if history positive)
- Measles, mumps, rubella immunity (2 MMR vaccines or serologic titers)
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
- Varicella immunity (2 vaccines, positive titer, or documented history)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season
- COVID vaccine records or declination
- 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, opiates, cocaine, methadone included)
Background & Documentation
- Background check within 1 year covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years; must be complete before start
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required prior to start
- Valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or state ID)
- Nursys verification prior to start
- Review and sign facility-specific documents including code of conduct, patient abuse reporting, confidentiality agreement, orientation packet, automated dispensing cabinet security, and annual tuberculosis screening questionnaire
- Provide 2 professional references within 3 years of hire
Additional Notes
- Local candidates within 50 miles are accepted
- No blocked scheduling; every other weekend and every other holiday off
This position is ideal for experienced step-down RNs comfortable with cardiac and respiratory patient care, telemetry monitoring, and post-procedural nursing in a fast-paced environment.
