Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Float Registered Nurse (RN)
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical Float Pool)
- Schedule:
- 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7 PM - 7:30 AM)
- 36 hours per week
- Must work a minimum of 3-4 weekend shifts per schedule
- Holiday rotation required
- Float Assignments: Med Surg floors at main hospital and Ashley River tower
- Patient Ratios: May vary depending on unit assignment
- On Call: Not required
- Block Scheduling: Possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
- Local Radius: 60 miles
- Locals Accepted: Yes, on a case-by-case basis
Experience & Licensure Requirements
- Years of Experience Required: 2 years in specialty

- Hurricane Season: June through November; travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during this time. Peak months are August and September. Confirm availability before accepting assignments during hurricane season.
- Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Parking: $20 registration fee for parking permit in garage; additional fees may apply for other parking locations
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Work Eligibility: Completed and accurate I-9 form required
- Identification: Copy of Driver’s License/State ID and Social Security Card required
- Background Checks:
- Annual background check covering last 7 years of residence/employment
- Includes SSN trace, state and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, and international searches if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts may be accepted as placeholder
- NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers required
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS: Required for all clinical staff (AHA or ARC accepted)
- ACLS: Required for certain units (verify specific unit requirements)
- PALS: Required for pediatric units (not required for adult ER)
- TNCC: Required as applicable; not required for ER RNs
- Other Certifications: May be required depending on unit (e.g., CHEMO for Oncology, NIH Stroke for ER)
- Competency Exams: Medication and unit-specific competency exams required
- Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement: Required
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical Exam: Initial and annual updates required
- Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Vaccinations:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form required
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30) or medical/religious exemption accepted (no declinations)
- COVID vaccines highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters may be needed for low titers
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- TB Testing: Negative T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days of start; annual TB questionnaire required
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
Facility Specific Requirements
- Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, business casual attire
- Orientation Modules: Must be completed prior to start; estimated 2 hours
- COVID & Flu Documentation: Must be uploaded into facility system prior to start
- Radiation Badge: Required for certain specialties (not applicable for this RN float position unless specified)
Additional Notes
- Candidates with background hits or licensure issues may face delays or disqualification
- Walk-through (temporary) licensure process available for SC RN license under certain conditions
- Travelers must comply with all facility policies and complete required documentation timely to avoid delays or removal from assignment
This position is suitable for RNs with at least 2 years of experience in medical-surgical nursing, who are comfortable working night shifts and weekend rotations, and who hold the required licensure and certifications. Prior travel experience is not mandatory.
