Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)

Location: Richmond, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 36


Unit Description

  • Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU/CVICU) at a Level 1 facility
  • Experience in CSICU/CVICU required
  • EPIC electronic health record system experience required (no exceptions)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of CVICU experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID must be carried during hours of service
  • Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet physical demands of the position
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (vaccine or declination)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (titers required; booster if low titer)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per protocol (Q-gold/T-spot within 30 days of start or two PPDs)
  • Annual TB questionnaire required regardless of TB status
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required (no declinations accepted)
  • Drug screening within 60 days of start (9-panel minimum; instant drug screens not accepted)

Background and Compliance Checks

  • Criminal background check within 60 days of start, including:
    • All states lived/worked in past 7 years
    • State of permanent residence
    • VA Statewide Repository Search
    • Sex offender registry
    • Education verification
  • E-Verify/I9 attestation required
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Virginia State Police fingerprint-based national criminal background check required (results can pend if proof of submission is on file)
  • Central Registry Search (CPS) required within 48 hours of contract signing; candidates may start with results pending if submission proof is provided
  • Education verification: degree from an accredited nursing program (NLN or CCNE) required

Orientation and Competency Testing

  • Orientation includes:
    • Pharmacology exam
    • Point of Care Testing
    • Airborne Precaution Mask Fitting
    • Basic Knowledge Assessment Tool (BKAT) for ICU and Telemetry/Step-Down units
  • Completion of assigned learning modules (~6 hours) during orientation week
  • Competency exams required, including medication/pharmacology competency and abuse reporting competency covering physical/sexual abuse, domestic violence, and neglect/exploitation of vulnerable adults

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must bring the following items prior to document due date:
    • Mask (cloth acceptable)
    • Headphones (non-wireless)
    • Laptop or cell phone (notify if not available)
  • No onsite certification renewals; renewals must be scheduled prior to contract start
  • Performance evaluations are completed at the end of the assignment, not required prior to start

Endoscopy unit is a well run, well oiled machine. Staff is very professional and management on point! It was my favorite travel job so far!

Cons

The fact that you need to walk through metal detectors, but it’s for everyone’s safety!
