Registered Nurse (RN) - Operating Room (OR) - Contract
Location: New York, NY
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to patients in the Operating Room setting, applying nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans, prioritize patient needs, and educate patients and caregivers.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Deliver care based on Relationship Centered Care and nursing process.
- Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
- Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care.
- Collaborate with healthcare team on care plans.
- Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
- Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
- Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
- Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.
Patient Experience
- Role model Relationship Centered Care practices (e.g., Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding).
- Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
- Address patient/family concerns and escalate as needed.
- Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.
Quality and Safety
- Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers to improvement.
- Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety.
- Implement process improvement and evidence-based strategies.
- Participate in peer and institutional reviews.
- Collaborate on quality improvement projects and nursing research.
- Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
- Escalate safety hazards according to protocol.
- Document nursing practice to support quality and performance initiatives.
Operations
- Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
- Coordinate supply and inventory management with leadership.
- Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
- Use patient-focused, cost-effective approaches to resource utilization.
- Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
- Maintain accurate documentation in compliance with standards.

- Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
- Project a professional image demonstrating caring and respect.
- Incorporate ethical principles in decision-making.

Qualifications
- Current New York State RN License required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Certification for Surgical Technologist (NBSTA for CST), NA, Heartsaver preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of medical Operating Room experience.
- Minimum 2 years RN experience.
- 1 year travel nursing experience required for travel positions (not required for per diem).
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system highly preferred.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing considered with relevant experience or active BSN matriculation.
Unit Information
- Average census: 50 cases per day
- Unit beds: 19
- Staffing ratio: 1:1
- Schedule: Varying shifts including weekends (rotational), on-call, and holiday volunteers
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-volume OR unit with a focus on quality, safety, and patient-centered care within a collaborative interdisciplinary team.
