Registered Nurse (RN) – Med/Surg Oncology

Location: Medford, Oregon
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week (every other weekend required)

Unit & Patient Care Details

• Department: Medical-Surgical Oncology
• Unit Size: 32 beds
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Days: 4-5 patients per nurse
  • Nights: 4-6 patients per nurse
• Patient Types: Medical oncology patients; chemo certification required only if specified during interview
• Common Skills Required:

  • General assessments
  • IV starts
  • Portacath access
  • Medication administration
  • Competence with chest tubes, central lines, and heparin drips
• RNs are not required to titrate drips or read their own telemetry strips
• Charge Nurse is present but rarely takes patient assignments
• CNAs available at a ratio of 1:8
• Respiratory Therapy equipment includes CPAP and High Flow devices

Scheduling & Orientation

• No self-scheduling or block scheduling
• Weekend and holiday work required
• Standby call for low census
• Floating assignments may include Heart Center, General Medicine, Post-Surgical, and Ortho-Neuro units
• Orientation: Two 12-hour shifts (non-billable) during the first week

Required Qualifications

• Active RN license (Oregon or eligible for 90-day temporary license if permanent license is pending)
• Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg experience required
• BLS certification required
• Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN), and Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certifications preferred but not required

• Local candidates within 50 miles are not accepted
• Dress Code: Scrubs of any color allowed; no visible tattoos above shoulders; only facial piercing allowed is a nose stud; natural hair color only (no unnatural colors)
