Registered Nurse (RN) - Centralized Registry Float

Location: Fort Wayne, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Weekend Requirement: 3 weekend shifts in 4 weeks


Job Summary

Provide general medical-surgical nursing care on Level 1, Level 2, or tertiary units. Float to other medical units as needed, focusing on areas with the greatest patient care needs. Patient ratios typically range from 1:5 to 1:6.


Patient Population & Conditions

  • Diverse adult patients with chronic illnesses such as COPD, Diabetes, CHF, and end-stage renal disease
  • Gastrointestinal issues including pancreatitis, bleeding, gastroparesis, inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Infectious diseases like pneumonia, cellulitis, sepsis, UTI, and C. difficile
  • Neurological conditions including stroke, dementia, traumatic brain injuries
  • Mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse
  • Patients undergoing procedures like colonoscopies, thoracentesis, paracentesis, bronchoscopy, and minor surgeries (laparoscopic cholecystectomy, incision and drainage, biopsies, amputations)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Patient assessments and care planning
  • Inter-professional communication and collaboration
  • Utilization of electronic health records (Epic)
  • Management of IV therapy, including heparin and insulin drips
  • Operation of medical equipment such as IV pumps, wound vacs, feeding pumps and tubes, chest tubes, telemetry monitors
  • Use of pyxis medication dispensing machines, Accucheck blood glucose monitors, and sequential compression devices (SCDs) for VTE prevention
  • Application of heat/cooling pads as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 1.5 years of experience in Level 1, Level 2, or tertiary care units
  • At least 1 year of MedSurg experience at a large hospital (600+ beds)
  • Current Indiana RN license or compact RN license (effective 7/1/20)
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)

Orientation & Training

  • Jump Start orientation program including:
    • 1 day general hospital orientation
    • Approximately 5 days nursing orientation
    • Epic electronic health record training

Additional Information

  • Dress code: Caribbean Blue scrubs
  • Floating limited to other medical units only
  • Call-off policy allows cancellation up to 24 hours before shift during the 13-week assignment
  • 8 hours of non-billable orientation; returning clinicians within 12 months are not eligible for non-billable orientation
  • Local clinicians (within 50 miles) may be subject to a rate adjustment (not included here)

This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg RNs comfortable with diverse patient populations and flexible floating assignments within medical units.
