Registered Nurse - NICU

Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Provide care for critically ill newborns and infants in a 26-bed Level III/IV NICU, supporting patients from admission to discharge. The unit focuses on patient- and family-centered care and manages infants with complex medical and surgical needs, including post-op care, g-tubes, trach/vent management, and various ventilation modes.


Schedule

  • Evening/Night shifts (12 hours): 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
  • Monday through Friday
  • Required to work 2-3 weekends per 6-week scheduling period

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience
  • NICU experience within the last year
  • Experience with trach/vent management
  • Experience with various modes of invasive and noninvasive ventilation
  • Basic Arrhythmia experience
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Licensure & Certifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification

Education

  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Additional Requirements

  • Traveler’s permanent address must be within 50 miles of the work site
  • Floating required: may be assigned to multiple units or locations based on staffing needs
  • Must complete facility-specific background checks and verifications as required
  • Required to complete Pediatric Telemetry Test annually through the designated LMS platform
  • Compliance with state-mandated caregiver screening and other health document requirements

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Proof of immunizations/vaccinations including:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (one adult dose required)
    • MMR (2 doses or positive titers)
    • Varicella (2 doses or positive titer)
    • Hepatitis B vaccination series or declination form
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray as per facility guidelines
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption
  • Drug screening as per standard clinical requirements
  • Physical exam within 1 year (Aya standard)

Competencies & Testing

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exams as applicable
  • Annual skills checklist and competency exams required
  • Pass/Fail Telemetry testing with remediation process if needed

Notes

  • Two clinical references within the last 3 years required
  • Employment application required
  • Facility requires signed acknowledgment of safety and orientation manuals

Pros

The city is great spring-fall. The hospital is fast paced and they let travelers take sicker kids, the staff is friendly and helpful, the manager is so sweet.

Cons

The parking situation is awful, either walk for 10 minutes from a satellite lot/garage or pay $15 to park in patient garage (which they started cracking down on). Winter is BRUTAL.
