NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Knoxville, Tennessee
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Scheduled Hours: 36 hours per week
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Specialty: Neonatal ICU (NICU)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2 to 1:3 depending on patient acuity
  • Weekend Requirement: Yes; minimum 2 weekends per 4-week scheduling period, preferably 3 of 4 if needed by unit
  • Floating: Rare, only within Women’s Services and within scope
  • Block Schedule: Requests will be accommodated if possible but not guaranteed
  • Locals Accepted: Yes
  • On-call: No
  • Guaranteed Hours: Scheduled for 36 hours/week; may only be called off within contract parameters

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Tennessee
  • Minimum 2 years of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Completion of at least one prior travel nursing assignment
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID must be carried during hours of service
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year criminal history check (all locations lived/worked in past 7 years)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks updated every contract renewal
    • Education verification of highest degree earned
  • Drug Testing:
    • 10-panel drug screen with alcohol test within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Immunizations and Health Documents:
    • Physical exam within last 12 months (physician statement)
    • TDAP vaccine required; declination form if declined
    • Negative TB test (QGOLD, Tspot within 3 months or 2 PPDs as specified)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella: titer or 2 vaccines; boosters if titer low
    • Hepatitis B: series or positive titer required; declinations accepted only under specific circumstances
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines, titer, or history of chickenpox; boosters or declination if negative/equivocal
    • Flu vaccine required annually (Oct 1 – Mar 31); exemptions require facility and agency forms and approval
    • Hepatitis A required only for select units (not specified as required for NICU)
  • Fit Testing: Required for respiratory protection mask assignment
  • Photo for badge: Recent, plain background, shoulders up, no filters or face coverings (except religious or glasses)
  • References: 2 professional references within 2 years required for travel positions
  • Skills Checklist: Must be updated annually for applicable unit
  • Employment application and resume required

Additional Notes

  • Pending licenses are NOT accepted
  • Return-to-Office (RTO) restrictions: None, but preference for minimum time on assignment
  • No other special requirements noted
