Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM), totaling 36 hours/week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Float Requirement: Must float within scope to like units/sister facilities as needed
  • Staffing Ratios: Approximately 1:5 (may vary)
  • Holiday Rotation: Yes
  • On-call: Not applicable

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years in specialty (Medical Surgical)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not accepted for first-timers (prior travel experience required)
  • Licensure: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit
  • Other:
    • Must pass medication/pharmacology competency exam
    • Color blindness testing required prior to start
    • Competency exam required
    • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
  • Block scheduling possible with manager approval
  • Local radius: 60 miles
  • Locals may be accepted on a case-by-case basis

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of work eligibility (I-9 form)
  • Copy of Driver’s License/State ID
  • Social Security Card or SSN verification
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year history with SSN trace, statewide, national criminal, sex offender registry, FACIS 3
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification (diploma or transcripts as placeholder if needed)
  • NURSYS license verification (active, unencumbered)
  • Drug screening: 10-panel urine drug screen within 90 days of start
  • Physical exam: Initial and updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask (specific models required) within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters if needed
    • Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters if needed
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination form
    • TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or chest x-ray if positive history
    • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Employment history verification: Last 3 clinical employers verified

Orientation & Facility Specific Requirements

  • Completion of orientation modules prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
  • Upload COVID and flu vaccination records into facility system
  • Passport-style photo for badge required before start
  • Facility-specific safety and compliance acknowledgments required

Additional Notes

  • Radiation badge required only for specific roles (not applicable for Medical Surgical RN)
  • Sterile Processing Techs have additional lab and physical assessment requirements (not applicable here)
  • Prior travel experience is required; first-time travelers will not be accepted for this assignment

This position is ideal for experienced Medical Surgical RNs with prior travel contract experience who hold a valid SC or compact RN license and meet the certification and compliance requirements.
