Registered Nurse (PCU) - Night Shift

Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 18 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Shift: Nights (18:30 - 06:30)
  • Shift Length: 12 hours
  • Hours per Week: 48 hours guaranteed
  • Orientation: 1 day of unit-specific orientation
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
  • Floating: Required to float to MedSurg or ICU for PCU acuity patients
  • Patient Population: Adults with cardiac med/surg, dialysis, cancer, vascular issues, sepsis, respiratory conditions, stroke, post-stent, post-pacemaker placement, renal failure
  • Unit Size: 40 beds, average daily census 24
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5 (days and nights)
  • Support Staff: Nurse aides/patient care techs with 1:12 ratio
  • Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes assignment

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Competency required in managing arterial lines
  • RNs must titrate drips including Heparin, Nitro, Dopamine, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and insulin
  • RNs must read and interpret telemetry strips independently
  • Troubleshooting respiratory equipment such as high flow oxygen devices
  • Use of overhead lifts, portable lifts, vein finders, and bladder scanners

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Nebraska
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least some experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Current certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • Competent in managing arterial lines

Additional Information

  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
  • Strict scheduling policies: no blocked scheduling except weekends, no shared or duo schedules
  • If called back to work while on call, must arrive within 30 minutes
  • Focus on patient experience, responsiveness, communication, and teamwork
  • Cultural diversity on unit includes primarily Hispanic and Somalian populations
  • Successful nurses are flexible, adaptable, team players with strong communication skills
  • Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days per 13-week contract; no additional RTO approved
