Registered Nurse - Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Neuro Acute 6N
Unit Size: 48 beds (including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms)
Shift: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm), days and nights
Schedule:
- Weekend requirement: 3 shifts per 4-week period (self-scheduling)
- Holidays: Work into holiday rotation
- Floating: Possible to Med Surg/Telemetry floors
Job Description
- Care for patients with epilepsy, brain tumors, subdural hematoma, scoliosis surgeries, traumatic brain injury, and other neuro diagnoses
- Monitor 24-48 hour EEG trends
- Utilize strong critical thinking and assessment skills to detect subtle patient changes
- MedSurg/Telemetry RN with strong skills will be trained to assess cranial nerves
- Use of self-releasing velcro seat belts (not restraints)
- Expected to complete a floor-specific orientation (2 shifts)
- Participate in a Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (except Neuro ICU and ED with modified requirements)
- Teaching hospital environment; nursing students may be present
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license required
- Minimum 2 years of core experience in specialty (Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring)
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- ACLS and BLS certifications required
- BSN preferred; Med Surg/Telemetry certification preferred
- Cerner EMR experience required
- Prior travel experience required for Neuro ICU or Emergency Department
- Must pass a Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam within 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (maximum 2 attempts)
- Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation
- Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team
- No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
- Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
Additional Information
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4 (days and nights)
- Charge nurse role available (no patient assignment)
- Resource RN available day and night
- Nurse aides (PCTs) on days (1-2) and nights (1)
- Respiratory Therapist available 24/7; manages BiPAP ventilation
- IV Team (SWAT RN) available for difficult IV sticks
- Hospitalist or Intensivist present during day shifts
- Pharmacy available 24/7
- Must be off from previous permanent staff assignment for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
- No concurrent contracts allowed
- Strict onboarding deadlines and compliance requirements
Contract Length
- Minimum contract length: 13 weeks
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro Acute care RNs with strong critical thinking skills, trauma experience, and prior travel experience who are comfortable working in a teaching hospital environment with complex neurological patients.
