Unit Overview
- 20-bed PACU (open bay layout)
- Average daily census: 30–40 patients
- Patient population: Primarily pediatric (ages 0–17), both inpatient and outpatient
- Surgical coverage: All specialties except cardiac
Experience Requirements
- Minimum: 1 year RN experience
- Preferred: 2 years in pediatric critical care
- Travel experience: At least one completed travel assignment required (no first-time travelers)
Patient Ratios
- 1:1 or 1:2 (based on acuity)
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
Clinical Skills & Expectations
- Experience managing IV drips (e.g., heparin, insulin, occasional cardiac drips)
- Limited BiPAP use; primarily post-operative cases
- Ventilated patients are typically transferred directly to ICU
- Ability to care for occasional adult patients as needed
- Strong teamwork mindset in an open-bay, "all hands on deck” environment
- Self-motivated, resourceful, and proactive in seeking support when needed

- PACU Educator
- Dedicated Charge Nurse/Manager (no patient assignments)
- 24/7 Anesthesia support
- No phlebotomy services (RN responsible for telemetry monitoring)
Technology & Equipment
- EMR: Epic
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Medication Dispensing: Omnicell
- Patient Monitors: Philips
Floating
- May occasionally care for adult patients within the unit
Orientation
- New Employee Orientation (NEO)
- 2 precepted unit shifts
Shift Details
- 12-hour Day Shift (48 hours/week)
- Shift hours: 09:00 – 21:00 (based on provided range)
Call & Scheduling Requirements
- 4–5 on-call shifts per 8-week period
- Includes nights, weekends, and holidays
