Speech-language pathologist assistants are support personnel who specialize in assisting speech-language pathologists in the assessment and treatment of various communication disorders, including speech, language, voice, swallowing, and hearing disorders. SLPAs aren’t allowed to treat patients independently but must work under the supervision of a licensed SLP and implement activities as directed by SLPs. Employment of speech-language pathologists is projected to grow 25% from 2019 to 2029, which should also increase the need for SLPAs. Licensed SLPs who employ SLPAs can extend their services, thereby serving the needs of a growing and more diverse client base through increased access to their speech-language programs.
