COURSE FORMAT

About

Social workers serve their communities through client assessment, treatment plans, securing necessary resources, and client advocacy. They work in areas of policy and social program development, research, administration, and independent mental health therapy roles.

The Certified Children, Youth & Family Social Worker (C-CYFSW) is offered by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). This certification is relevant for social workers who work with youth under the age of 18 years and their families.

The C-CYFSW application is located on the NASW website. The initial application fee is $350 for non-members and $140 for members of NASW.

NASW membership is not required to apply for the C-CYFSW renewal. Your membership must be in good standing to receive a discounted application rate.

Certification

The following prerequisite is needed to apply for C-CYFSW certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited university. The program must have been accredited at the time the degree was received. An official transcript is required and must be sent directly to NASW.

  • Completion of one year, measured by 1500 hours, of direct client care of youth and family social work responsibilities. Administrative duties do not qualify as part of the 1500 hours.

  • Supervisor evaluation attesting to the completion of the 1500 hours of client care.  The evaluations must attest to three years of qualifying experience. Multiple supervisor evaluations are allowed if needed.

  • Reference from a social work colleague. This reference must be a different person than the supervisor.

The NASW recommends that the supervisor evaluations be completed by a licensed social worker.

In addition to the previous list, one of the following is required:

  • Licensure by exam at the BSW level.

  • Completion of Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) exam with passing score.

  • An additional year of experience and 20 CE hours.

Renewal

The C-CFYSW credential is valid for two years.  The certification can be renewed by completing 20 CE hours.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an NASW certification if I already have a state social work license?

The NASW specialty certification does not take the place of state licensure that is required for practice. The C-CYFSW certification designates those professionals with evidence of additional knowledge and experience in the field.

Where can I locate NASW offered CE programs?

The NASW maintains a list of conferences, workshops, and learning events on the NASW CE Portal.

May I use the required CE hours for my state license renewal for my certification travel?

The NASW allows for CE hours completed for state license renewal to also be applied to the C-CYFSW renewal as long as the CE is directly related to the client population.

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) offers the C-CYFSW.
