About

The Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE) is a standardized test administered by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) to assess the pharmacy jurisprudence knowledge of prospective pharmacists. It’s a requirement for pharmacist licensure in most U.S. states and territories. The MPJE combines federal-specific and state-specific law questions to test an applicant's knowledge and understanding of legal and regulatory standards in the pharmacy profession.

Eligibility

The MPJE is intended for recent college of pharmacy graduates, licensed pharmacists wanting to practice in other jurisdictions and foreign-education pharmacists who are Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certified.

Applicants must have:

  • Graduated from an entry-level school accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or earned FPGEC certification

Passing the MPJE may be required for initial licensure or licensure transfer in each jurisdiction where candidates wish to practice. Currently, 48 boards of pharmacy require passing the MPJE. Arkansas and California have their own jurisprudence exam and Idaho, Vermont, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands don’t require a jurisprudence exam.

Completion Time: 2.5 hours

Cost:

  • $170 exam fee and $100 nonrefundable application fee per jurisdiction

  • $85 additional nonrefundable processing fee if applying to practice in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, District of Columbia (D.C.), Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah or Wisconsin

Course Format

Exam Format

The MPJE is unique for each state or jurisdiction and contains 120 computer-based questions, with 100 scored and 20 unscored. It uses adaptive technology, so candidates can’t skip questions or go back and change answers. Candidates have 2.5 hours to complete the exam, but the total appointment time is 2 hours and 50 minutes to allow time to read and agree to the NABP’s non-disclosure agreement, read the tutorial and complete a post-exam survey. Topics on the exam:

  • Licensure/Personnel (22%)

  • Pharmacist Practice (33%)

  • Dispensing Requirements (24%)

  • Pharmacy Operations (21%)

Candidates receive a pass/fail results, not a scaled score. They must complete a minimum of 107 of the 120 questions to receive a result. Results are posted to the candidate's NABP e-Profile for most jurisdictions and within 14 business days for jurisdictions that participate in NABP’s online exam result interface. However, Illinois, Minnesota, Montana and Guam require results to be mailed to the candidate.

Those who fail the exam may retake it but must begin the eligibility process again and pay the full exam fee and nonrefundable application fee. They receive their new Authorization to Test after the mandatory 30-day waiting period following the date of the previous exam attempt. However, some jurisdictions require a longer waiting period between attempts. Candidates have a maximum of 5 attempts per jurisdiction to pass the MPJE unless the board of pharmacy in a jurisdiction determines otherwise.
