 The RN assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. They consider all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences. The RN must be able to communicate effectively with all customers. They provide a safe working environment and follows established safety and infection control standards, policies and procedures, clinical guidelines, and monitors staff compliance with same. 
 
The RN influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team and they must have excellent observation skills, ability to critically think and ability to make quick, appropriate, effective decisions. The RN is responsible for creating complete notes for the patient chart following templates designed for regulatory agency compliance as well as other necessary documentation. The RN may be assigned other related duties and/or administrative projects by the Nurse Manager or designee. They serve as an effective member of the healthcare team utilizing interpersonal and collaborative skills. By establishing professional relationships with Veterans, peers, families, health care providers, supervisors, and administrators, they assist in initiating improvement in patient care delivery and identification and resolutions affecting the delivery of patient care which improves the overall organizational operations. 
 
The GI/Endoscopy RN primary duties include, but are not limited to:

<li>Providing moderate sedation and managing care for gastrointestinal and pulmonary outpatients and critically ill inpatients.</li>
<li>Conducting pre and post procedure patient education and nursing assessments.</li>
<li>Monitoring, stabilizing vital signs and hemodynamic status, management of PACU I and PACU II level recovery.</li>
<li>Maintaining patient airway, initiate and monitor invasive lines, patient tubes, catheters, and drains.</li>
<li>Assessing patient motor and sensory function; assessing orientation status and compare to baseline.</li>
<li>Maintaining physical and emotional comfort, as well as, providing adequate pain management.</li>
<li>Assisting the gastroenterologist in performing tech functions if required and as needed during the procedure when assigned.</li>
<li>Transporting the Veteran safely to the recovery area upon determining the patient meets criteria for discharge from procedural area, documenting responses to interventions, findings, and reporting changes in patient status.</li>
<li>Communicating handoff information regarding patient status to receiving unit prior to transfer, including emergency contact information for physician and family members identified by the patient.</li>
<li>Accountable for defined groups of patients on their shift.</li>
<li>Based on education and experience, she/he may be assigned responsibilities such as preceptor, or as charge nurse.</li>
<li>Call coverage based on unit needs.</li>
