Description

Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN) - 13 Week Contract

Location: Nampa, Idaho
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Environment

  • Unit: Emergency Room (ER)
  • Trauma Level: IV
  • STEMI and Stroke Receiving: Yes, but patients needing intervention are transferred out
  • ER Size: 24 rooms (including 1 trauma/crash room) plus 4 low acuity bays used as Fast Track
  • Separate Triage Area: Yes (travelers typically do not triage)
  • Behavioral Health: 4 dedicated psych/seclusion rooms with secured supplies
  • Security: In-house 24/7, stationed in lobby near triage
  • Average Patients per Day: 110-120
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:3-4
  • Charge Nurse: Available 24/7, does not take patient assignments (shift 7am-7pm)
  • Support Staff: ED techs, sitters (as needed for behavioral health), and secretary 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7 with 2-3 RTs on site; RTs manage vents, CPAP, BiPAP, ABGs, breathing treatments; RNs perform EKGs and troubleshoot respiratory equipment
  • Imaging: X-Ray and CT located in ER hallway; patients transported by staff
  • Phlebotomy: RNs primarily draw labs; phlebotomy assists with difficult sticks

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • All ages, including pediatric patients (about 20% under 18)
  • Common cases: respiratory issues, abdominal pain, strokes, STEMIs, chest pain, trauma from outdoor activities (e.g., fishing hooks, hiking), farming injuries
  • Diverse population including migrant workers and older farmers

Required Certifications & Experience

  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ENPC (all required)
  • Experience: Minimum 1-2 years of Emergency Department experience
  • Comfort with pediatric patients required
  • First-time travelers are welcome

Shift & Scheduling

  • Shift Length: 12 hours (night shifts)
  • Typical Start Times: 7:30pm, 9:00pm, 10:00pm, 11:30pm, 1:30am, 3:30am, 7:30am
  • Scheduling: Self-scheduling with final approval by manager
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: As needed
  • Call/Standby: None
  • Floating: Possible float to nearby ERs in Meridian and Boise, but infrequent

  • Orientation: 1 shift unit-specific orientation in ER
  • Work Environment: Fast-paced with quick room turnover; minimal downtime
  • Team Culture: Young, experienced staff with good nurse-to-patient ratios; social and supportive work environment
  • Local Area: Close to agricultural areas; nearby cities (Meridian, Boise) offer recreational activities and entertainment about 20 minutes away

Additional Notes

  • Boarding of patients occurs occasionally, with holds intermixed in ER; longest hold reported is 20 hours
  • Protocols run in lobby for patients waiting (e.g., IV starts, lab orders) to reduce wait times
  • Scrub Color/Dress Code: Any clean, professional color allowed
