Description

Registered Nurse – Emergency Department

Location: Twin Falls, Idaho
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Evenings
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week


Unit & Environment

  • Level 3 Trauma, STEMI, and Stroke Receiving Emergency Department
  • 25 beds divided into 2.5 zones, including 3 triage rooms and 3 trauma bays
  • Separate triage area with 3 rooms; ER holds intermixed throughout the ER
  • 2 designated safer rooms for psychiatric/seclusion patients, with additional rooms available as needed
  • Security present 24/7, located within the ER
  • Average patient volume: ~109 patients per day
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4, with staffing goal of 3 RNs and 1 CNA per 8-room zone
  • No LPNs in the ED
  • Fast Track area with 4 rooms adjacent to the ER

Required Certifications & Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Idaho
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • ED - Emergency Department (1 year of experience)
  • ED - Emergency Department experience within the last year
  • 2 or more completed travel assignments at different locations
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • TNCC
  • Triage experience
  • Trauma experience

Preferred Experience

  • Trauma bay experience
  • Epic electronic health record experience

Typical Patient Diagnoses

  • Abdominal pain, diabetes mellitus, hypertension
  • STEMI, NSTEMI, stroke
  • Prioritized trauma cases

Team Composition & Support

  • 1-4 Emergency Physicians plus Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners; no dedicated pediatric physician
  • 1 charge nurse per shift, who may have patient assignments (more common on nights)
  • CNAs assigned 1 per zone, may float to assist throughout the ER
  • Respiratory Therapists available 24/7, providing respiratory treatments and managing equipment (CPAP, BiPAP, Airvo/Optiflow, ventilators)
  • Pharmacist coverage approximately 12 hours daily
  • Phlebotomy available 24/7; RNs perform blood draws on IV starts and acute transports
  • RNs expected to transport acute patients to imaging (X-ray, CT) adjacent to the department

Scheduling & Work Expectations

  • Evening shifts typically start between 1:00 PM and 6:30 PM, ending between 1:30 AM and 6:30 AM
  • Initial weeks may require filling scheduling gaps; later scheduling allows input on availability
  • Template scheduling often allows for 5 consecutive days off every 3-4 weeks
  • Weekend shifts every other week, possibly less with template scheduling
  • Holiday rotation participation may be required
  • Possible call or callback assignments with additional pay
  • Floating to other units not required but may be requested for specific tasks
  • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs

Orientation & Additional Information

  • Unit-specific orientation lasts 1-2 days with a preceptor, including leader rounding and chart reviews
  • Maximum of 5 days of requested time off (RTO) allowed per contract; preference for full-time scheduling around RTO

This position is ideal for experienced ER nurses with trauma and triage skills who have prior travel nursing experience and certifications current in BLS, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC.
