Occupational Therapist

Job Description

This position is responsible for providing occupational therapy services to outpatient populations, which includes assessment, treatment, and care, as well as participating in educational instruction for patients and their families. The Occupational Therapist must be skilled in interpreting a patient's self-report, behavior, and understanding the cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturation processes. Treatment plans should be individualized to reflect an understanding of each patient's developmental needs and treatment requirements. Additionally, this role offers the unique opportunity to oversee a growing elbow/wrist/hand program with strong referral support from local providers. Mentorship will be available from an experienced provider with over 25 years in developing hand therapy programs.

Essential Functions

  • Obtain comprehensive patient medical and social history and assess current status.
  • Evaluate each patient as directed by the ordering physician, develop patient care plans, and administer treatments for physical disabilities resulting from injury, disease, or surgery.
  • Re-evaluate and assess patient status, modifying treatment programs as necessary.
  • Administer therapeutic treatments using physical agents and techniques to relieve pain, restore functions, and prevent disability.
  • Document all pertinent information after providing direct patient care using the electronic medical record, and educate patients and their families regarding treatment plans and procedures.
  • Complete billing procedures for services provided on a daily basis.
  • Utilize techniques such as heat, electricity, water, massage, and exercise in treatment.
  • Prepare reports including evaluations/re-evaluations, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Provide direction to assisting support staff in occupational therapy patient care.
  • Organize daily workload efficiently and manage time effectively for self and support staff.
  • Monitor safety and effectiveness of all patient care equipment and work environment, reporting deficiencies promptly.

Education & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Association, preferred; advanced degree or training is a plus.
  • License: Active or eligible to obtain Washington state Occupational Therapist license.
  • Experience: Preferred one year of outpatient care experience, including hand therapy and splinting. Experience in evaluating and providing care across the age continuum, from school-age children to geriatric patients.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional responsibilities include standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, crouching, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
  • Considerable physical activity involving heavy lifting and handling of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and mobility required.
  • Good vision to observe patient assessment data and use manual/automated documentation tools.
  • Strong cognitive abilities for assessment and decision-making in patient management.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, for accurate information exchange with healthcare professionals, patients, and families.

Note: Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (HCP) certification must be completed within three months of hire.

Shift Information

Days. Holiday coverage is not required. Minimum experience of less than one year is preferred.
