Durango is nestled in the Four Corners area of Colorado in the furthest reaches of the state's southwest territory near New Mexico, far from cities like Denver and Boulder in the Front Range. It sits at the edge of craggy peaks and evergreen forests with the Animas River running through, ideal for fishing, kayaking, rafting, paddleboarding and tubing. Many visitors and locals enjoy hiking and skiing in the San Juan Mountains, but Durango may best be known for its historic steam train. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad brings passengers back to the late 19th century on the vintage train that travels to the tiny town of Silverton with its impressive National Historic District. Durango also has plenty of historic charms, with a distinct Old West feel and streets lined with elegant Victorian-era saloons and hotels tucked between award-winning restaurants, shops, galleries and museums.
