Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Level 1 Trauma Neuro ICU position requiring 2 years of ICU experience, neuro skills, and travel nursing background.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a 32-bed Neuro ICU within a Level 1 Trauma acute care setting
  • Care for critical patients with neurological diagnoses, including post-craniotomy, brain tumors, brain biopsies, and complex spine surgeries
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2 in ICU; may float to Tele units with a 4:1 ratio
  • 12-hour night shifts, 7pm-7am, with four weekend shifts per four weeks and assignment to two of four major holidays
  • Float required to all ICU and Telemetry units; travelers are first to float
  • Cerner EMR is used
  • Phillips telemetry monitors and ventilators in use
  • Duties include providing ICU-level neuro nursing care, ICP and EVD monitoring, and supporting patients post-neurosurgical procedures
  • May be placed on standby for scheduled shifts
  • Charge nurse support available with no patient assignment
  • Orientation includes two floor orientation shifts and a pass/fail Skills SIMs Lab on Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes
  • Travelers must have their own vehicle for commute
  • Scrub requirement is any color or print (non-offensive), with steel grey preferred for neuro units
  • Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing; only natural hair colors and no facial piercings allowed
  • Not open to first-time travelers
  • Education in equipment lifts, restraints, and wound care will be provided as part of orientation
  • Holiday coverage rotates with core staff

Requirements

  • Active RN license (state or compact) required and must be in hand at time of consideration
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • Minimum of 2 years ICU experience in large (450+ bed) hospitals
  • Must have Level 1 Trauma experience
  • At least 3-6 months of prior travel nurse experience is required
  • Experience with external ventricular drain (EVD) management and strong neuro assessment skills required
  • Experience with intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring required
  • Cerner EMR experience preferred
  • Must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam prior to offer and a sterile technique test on the first day of orientation (2 attempts maximum)
  • Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility; driver's license used as proof of residence
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed by CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facilities within the past year
  • Professional references required: one supervisor reference from the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor reference from the last 3 years
