Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Night Shift PCU position in an Ortho Neuro Surgical mixed acuity unit, requiring at least one year of stepdown experience and Epic proficiency.
Responsibilities
- Work in a 64-bed Ortho Neuro Surgical unit covering intermediate, telemetry, and MedSurg levels
- Patients include surgical (urology, abdominal surgeries), ortho trauma, total joints, neuro/spine, and general medical cases such as CHF, renal failure, pneumonia, and more
- Shift is 12-hour nights with a 36-hour workweek
- RN to patient ratio is 1:4; CNA to patient ratio is 1:8
- Uses Epic for charting, Alaris, and Omnicell
- May float to any adult inpatient unit within scope, including Med Surg, Heart/Vascular, Oncology, Observation
- Weekend rotation required, up to 4 out of every 6 weekends; must specify if open to working every weekend
- No mandatory on-call requirement
- Two charge nurses per shift who do not take a patient load, resource and flex nurses, and CNA/RT/hospitalist support
- Orientation consists of unit/department instruction and two precepted shifts
- Care for a diverse adult patient population, including post-surgical, ortho/neuro trauma, and complex medical cases
- Must be comfortable accepting MedSurg assignments in addition to PCU-level cases
- Pod-based team structure with 2 RNs and 1 nurse aide per pod
- Education and resources are provided for post neuro-intervention patient types if needed
- Navy blue scrubs required
- Free parking is available
- Holiday time-off requests must be submitted prior to offer; currently, holiday RTO is not approved
- Blackout dates for time off from August 1-18 due to local events; up to 1.5 weeks off approved with contract extension
- Monthly audits for pain scoring compliance; 90% compliance required
- First-time travelers considered if meeting all experience and EMR requirements
Requirements
- Active RN license from the South Dakota Board of Nursing or Compact RN license
- Completion of an approved nursing education program
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum one year of IMC/stepdown nursing experience
- Epic charting experience required; first-time travelers must have prior Epic experience
- Ability to interpret cardiac strips, manage chest tubes, trach care (no fresh traches), NGT tubes, JP drains, line management, wound care, and perform medication administration and transfusions
- Experience with drip titration for heparin, insulin, Cardizem, amiodarone, Levophed, and related medications (willing to train on less common drips)
- Must live at least 100 miles outside of any Monument Health facility; local travelers not accepted
- Permanent staff must wait one full year before returning as a traveler
