Job Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring at least 1 year of nursing experience and South Dakota or Compact RN licensure.
Responsibilities
- Work in a hospital-based PCU/Medical unit with 36-48 beds and semi-private rooms as needed
- Patient population includes 90% Med/Surg and 10% Intermediate Care with all acuity levels
- Common diagnoses include DKA with insulin drips, pre/post-surgical cases, cellulitis, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal/hepatic failure, GI disorders, soft tissue injuries, fractures, DVTs, and CVA overflow
- PCU RN ratios: Med/Surg (no telemetry) 1:5-6, Med/Surg Telemetry 1:5, Intermediate Care 1:4
- Perform drip titration for Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed (up to 5 mcg), esmolol and other antihypertensives
- Responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry monitoring
- Shift is 12-hour days, with up to 48 hours per week
- Weekend rotation may include up to 4 out of every 6 weekends (Friday-Sunday)
- No mandatory call requirements; occasional on-call if picking up extra shifts
- Uses Epic charting system (Epic experience required for first-time travelers), Omnicell, and Alaris infusion pumps
- Floating required to any adult inpatient unit within scope
- Provide care for a broad range of medical, surgical, and intermediate care patients including long length-of-stay cases
- Manage administration of oral, IV, IM, SQ meds, titratable vasoactive drips, TPN/tube feedings, and blood product transfusions
- Perform peripheral IV, midline, PICC and central line maintenance, as well as management of chest tubes and drains
- Support from CNAs (1:8 ratio), on-shift charge nurse, phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, and hospitalist; no resource nurse or IV/VAT team
- Two days facility and department orientation including classroom time and two precepted shifts on the unit
- Navy blue scrubs required
- No RTO approved during Sturgis Motorcycle Rally blackout dates (August 1-18th, dates may vary); limited holiday time off approval
- First-time travelers considered with required experience
Requirements
- Active SD or Compact RN license required
- Minimum 1 year of recent nursing experience in PCU or similar setting
- Current certifications in BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Completion of a board-approved nursing education program
- Comfort with Med/Surg assignments, line and tube management, wound care, and telemetry strip interpretation
- Prior Epic charting experience required for first-time travelers
- Must live at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility
- Permanent staff must be separated for 1 year before returning as a traveler
