Job Description

American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for the Medical ICU with at least 1 year of ICU experience and a Michigan RN license.

Responsibilities

• Work in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) of a hospital setting
• Mixed patient population including ICU, PCU, and general medical transfer patients
• Patient ratios range from 1:1 for high acuity to 4:1 for lower acuity, with 2:1 for ventilated patients
• Expect to care for patients with diagnoses including COPD, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, DKA, AKI, and stroke
• Special procedures include CRRT, HD, arterial and central line placement, trach and chest tube placement
• Utilize equipment such as cooling machines, Bair Huggers, CRRT, and ventilators
• Day shifts are available in 12-hour blocks with every other weekend required
• Floating required to other ICU and medical-surgical units, with typical med-surg ratios of 5-6 patients per RN
• Must be available for the entire week of orientation
• Responsible for managing a range of acuities including general medical and high-acuity ICU patients
• Unit supports procedures and management for critically ill patients including ventilated cases and CRRT
• Staff will float in rotation with core unit RNs based on hospital census
• Must work every other weekend and adhere to specific holiday time-off policies (only one holiday off allowed and not consecutive days)
• Average of three ventilated patients daily on the unit
• Team includes support from physicians who may retain lower-acuity ICU patients within the unit
• Orientation attendance for the full week is required

Requirements

• Active Michigan RN license in hand
• Current BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale certifications (AHA required)
• Minimum of 1 year ICU nursing experience required
• IV therapy skills including arterial and central line management, blood product administration, PICC management, and IV initiation
• Ability to interpret and manage cardiac arrhythmias, multisystem organ failure, and CVA/stroke management
• Competency with BiPAP, CPAP, ventilator care, and high flow nasal cannula
• Emergency medication administration and titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
• Endocrine, renal, GI, and neurological patient management skills required
• First-time travelers are accepted for consideration
