Job Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Neuro ICU position requiring Level 1 Trauma and EVD experience as well as an active AZ or compact RN license.

Responsibilities

• Position is in the Neuro ICU within a Level 1 trauma hospital
• Acute care setting with a 32-bed Neuro ICU unit
• Patient population includes those requiring critical neuro care such as craniotomies, tumor resections, brain biopsies, and complex spine procedures
• Nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:2 in the ICU and 1:4 when floated to telemetry floors
• 12-hour day shifts from 7:00am to 7:00pm, with four weekend shifts per four-week schedule and holiday shifts based on unit core staff rotation
• Required to float to all ICU and telemetry units, with first-to-float status
• Uses Cerner EMR and Phillips monitors, with ventilator and ICP monitoring equipment
• Floor-specific orientation includes two on-unit shifts
• Charge nurse is present and does not take patients
• RNs will provide care for neurocritical patients including complex post-op neurosurgical cases
• Participation in SIMs Lab for family-specific procedures including sterile field maintenance is mandatory with a pass/fail outcome
• Standard orientation includes an initial 12 orientation hours and two unit-specific shifts
• May be placed on standby for scheduled shifts and subject to hospital shift cancellation policies
• Required to wear non-offensive scrubs, with steel grey recommended for neuro floors
• No facial piercings or unnatural hair colors allowed; male nurses must be clean shaven for fit testing
• First day includes a pass/fail exam with a provided study guide; failure to pass on the second attempt results in ineligibility for six months
• Holiday coverage expectations follow core staff rotation
• Respiratory therapy and pharmacy support available 24/7
• Travelers must have their own vehicle for commute and floating requirements

Requirements

• Active AZ or compact RN license in hand
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications
• Minimum of 2 years of recent ICU experience in a facility with at least 450 beds
• Level 1 Trauma experience and external ventricular drain (EVD) experience required
• At least 3-6 months of travel nursing experience
• Experience with neuro assessment and ICP monitoring
• Must pass a dysrhythmia (DYS) exam prior to job acceptance, with only two attempts allowed
• Must pass a sterile technique skills validation for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes on the first day
• Copy of driver’s license required for consideration
• Two professional references required: one supervisor reference from the past 12 months and one peer or supervisor reference from the past three years
• Not eligible if employed by CHI, Dignity, or CommonSpirit health system within the past year
• Must live at least 50 miles from the facility
