Job Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg-Oncology position requiring a ND or compact RN license and at least 2 years of acute care experience.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a 31-bed Med/Surg-Oncology unit within an acute care hospital setting
  • Serve adult and geriatric patients with diagnoses including stroke, CHF, COPD, cellulitis, chest pain, MI post-ICU, AMS/behavioral, select oncology cases, and surgical overflow (no joints or cranis)
  • Unit functions as a stroke unit with some acute cases (no thrombectomies)
  • Nurse to patient ratios are 1:4-5 on days and 1:5-6 on nights
  • Shifts are 12 hours, day shift, with every other weekend required
  • First to float to other Med/Surg units; will occasionally float to ER holds or Tele (with tele monitoring supported by dedicated staff)
  • Epic EMR system is used
  • Charge nurse available on every shift, nurse aides present (1:8 ratio)
  • Use of BiPAP and care for established trach patients, with blow by oxygen
  • RNs titrate common drips and perform care for patients with BiPAP and trachs (no vent management required)
  • RNs are not required to interpret telemetry strips; monitor techs and tele packs are available
  • No specific scrub color required
  • 1-2 shifts of unit-based orientation provided
  • Supportive, family-oriented team culture with strong collaboration
  • Holiday coverage required as needed
  • First time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Up to 7 days of requested time off (RTO) per 13-week contract must be declared up front; additional RTO will not be approved

Requirements

  • Active ND or compact RN license required at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 2 years recent acute Med/Surg experience
  • Experience with titrating drips such as Lasix and Heparin preferred, but not required
  • Epic EMR experience preferred
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor reference from the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor reference from within the past 3 years
  • Copy of valid driver's license required
  • Must not have been employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the last year
  • Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility
