Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced MS RN for a position in the ED Hold area with Cerner experience and the ability to manage a diverse med-surg patient population.
Responsibilities
- Work in the ED Hold area of a hospital at a Level II Trauma Center
- Care for med-surg patients with admission orders in an ED environment
- Patient population includes CHF exacerbation, TIA/CVA rule out, GI/GU issues, and more
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5
- Assignment requires use of Cerner EMR, Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
- Unit supported by CNAs, receptionists/HUCs, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalists
- Float as needed to like units including other MS, ICU, and ED hold units
- 12-hour day shifts from 7:00AM to 7:00PM, scheduled in 6-week cycles
- Weekend rotation includes every other weekend or four weekend days per month
- No on-call requirements
- Orientation consists of 24 hours classroom and 24 hours on-unit for new or returning travelers gone over a year
- Primary responsibility is to manage med-surg patients in an ED holding setting with frequent admissions and discharges
- Ability to adapt to quick turnover and assignment changes is important
- Work closely with a multidisciplinary team including support staff and hospitalists
- First-time travelers accepted with at least two years of experience and required EMR/trauma experience
- Approval for up to 7 days RTO possible excluding blackout dates
- Must work one major and one minor holiday per hospital policy
- Scrub colors are flexible—any color may be worn
- Free parking available behind the UAB building
Requirements
- Active AL or Compact RN license required
- Minimum 18 months of med-surg RN experience required
- BLS and NIHSS certifications required
- ACLS preferred
- CPI or similar certification required
- Cerner or EPIC EMR experience required
- Level II Trauma experience required for first-time travelers
- Strong assessment, communication, documentation, IV start, and blood administration skills necessary
- Experience with suctioning, O2 therapy, ostomy care, Foley/external catheter care, PEG/NGT use, wound and chest tube care, fall prevention, and restraint management preferred
- No local candidates within a 60-mile radius eligible
- Perm staff must wait six months after leaving to be considered as a traveler
