Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Pediatric Psychiatric Unit, requiring at least one year of behavioral health nursing and a ME or compact RN license.

Responsibilities

  • Work in an acute inpatient psychiatric unit for pediatric patients aged 5-18
  • Shifts are from 2:00 PM to 11:30 PM with a 36-hour work week
  • Patient ratios: Days 1:5-6, Nights 1:13 with resource support, and 6 psych techs on days for pediatrics
  • Floating required between pediatric and adult units; manager approval needed if not comfortable with pediatrics
  • Uses Cerner EMR system and Pyxis medication dispensing
  • Weekend and holiday rotation required; no on-call responsibilities
  • Seclusion rooms and specialized therapies including group sessions, pet therapy, and community gardens are part of the care environment
  • Primary responsibilities include providing nursing care to pediatric patients with psychiatric conditions such as eating disorders, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and others
  • No forensic patients or inmates treated in this facility
  • Traditional medical and psychiatric care are complemented by specialized group and therapy sessions
  • Support staff includes nurse supervisors, psych techs, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, and occupational therapists
  • Orientation includes the first week on days and a subsequent week on contracted shift
  • Scrubs of any solid, professional color are permitted
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Parking is free on site
  • Facility experiences heavy snow conditions in winter

Requirements

  • Active ME or compact RN license required
  • BLS certification required
  • Minimum one year of behavioral health nursing experience required; pediatric behavioral health experience preferred
  • Experience in de-escalation, use of physical restraints, medication passes, group facilitation, and documentation required
  • MOAB certification obtained onsite during orientation
  • Cerner EMR experience preferred
  • Must not have worked in any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity
  • Candidates must reside 100+ miles south or southwest of Bangor, ME facility for consideration
  • Flu vaccination required for start dates after 9/30/2024, with medical exemptions considered
