Description

Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Pediatric Psych position requiring a ME or compact license and behavioral health experience.

Responsibilities

  • Position based in a pediatric psychiatric inpatient unit within a free-standing acute facility
  • Night shift schedule from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM with 12-hour shifts and every other weekend rotation
  • RN patient ratio at night is 1:13 with resource support, including psych techs
  • Serves pediatric patients ages 5-18, with potential to float to adult psych units (adults 18+)
  • Common pediatric diagnoses include eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder
  • All patients are admitted from an ED and medically cleared, with involuntary and voluntary admissions
  • No forensic or inmate patients; seclusion rooms used when necessary
  • Cerner EMR and Pyxis medication administration system are used, previous experience preferred
  • Must work holidays as part of the rotation
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Professional, solid color scrubs required
  • Support on unit includes nurse supervisors, charge nurses, psych techs, contracted phlebotomists, NPs, psychiatrists, OT, and house administrators
  • Orientation consists of a first week on day shift followed by scheduled shifts
  • Facility accepts travelers whose permanent address is 100+ miles South/SW of Bangor, ME, and who have never held permanent employment with the health system
  • Flu vaccination required unless approved for a medical exemption
  • Free parking available on site
  • Heavy winter snow conditions are expected

Requirements

  • Active ME or compact RN license required
  • Minimum of 1 year behavioral health nursing experience required
  • BLS certification required
  • Pediatric behavioral health experience preferred; candidates without will need manager approval
  • Experience with de-escalation techniques and use of physical restraints necessary (no chemical restraints used)
  • Familiarity with medication passes, documentation, and group facilitation required
  • Willingness to float between pediatric and adult psych units
