Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for an Emergency Department position requiring a SD or compact RN license and demonstrated ED experience in a Level 2 trauma center.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a busy Emergency Department with 33 beds, including 8 trauma/resuscitation beds and specialized behavioral health rooms
  • Handles 150-180 patients daily across all age groups, from neonate to geriatric with a heavy trauma and critical care population
  • Patient types include trauma, sepsis, DKA, respiratory illness, GI bleeds, stroke, cardiac, and pediatric critical care
  • Patient ratio is typically 1:4-5 for RNs
  • Provide sexual assault evidence collection as part of a rotating responsibility
  • Uses Epic EMR, Omnicell, and Alaris equipment
  • Variable 12-hour shifts available and may include every weekend depending on staffing needs
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • May float to Med/Surg, PCU, or ICU as a task nurse within scope of practice
  • First-time travelers will not be considered
  • Travelers must reside more than 100 miles from the facility
  • Responsibilities include triage using ESI assessments, evidence collection for sexual assault cases, and caring for critical patients
  • Team includes techs (ED Tech ratio 1:10), lead tech, 24/7 charge RN, 24/7 physician and hospitalist coverage, RT, and security
  • Orientation includes 8 hours facility onboarding, 4 hours ED-specific education, and 2-3 supervised shifts on unit based on contract
  • Holiday coverage is expected only as needed
  • Navy scrubs required
  • Free parking provided
  • Must be comfortable precepting students if needed
  • No requests for time off are allowed during the first 3 weeks of August annually due to the Sturgis Bike Rally
  • Permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning as travelers

Requirements

  • Active SD or compact RN license required
  • Minimum 2 years of ED experience, excluding travel experience, is preferred
  • Candidates with 1.5 years of direct ED experience (excluding travel) plus 2 years of other RN experience may be considered with manager approval
  • Certifications required: BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and NIHSS; CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred
  • Completion of an approved nursing education program
  • Experience with all ED patient types, including trauma, cardiac, and pediatric critical care
  • Familiarity with Epic EMR is preferred
