Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a float pool position covering Med/Surg, Telemetry, and Stepdown units, with ACLS and BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

• Work in an acute care hospital environment as part of the float pool
• Float between Med/Surg, Telemetry, and Stepdown units based on staffing needs
• Med/Surg units feature mainly post-surgical, orthopedic, pneumonia, dialysis, palliative care, hospice, and COVID patients
• Stepdown unit has a heavy cardiac focus including dysrhythmias, CVAs, and patients downgraded from ICU
• Med/Surg nurse-patient ratios are 1:6-7, Stepdown nurse-patient ratios are 1:4-5
• Med/Surg units use remote telemetry monitoring with monitor tech support; Stepdown units require nurses to interpret telemetry strips
• Typical shift is 12 hours, with day shifts and every other weekend required
• May be required to float to ICU as helping hands
• Uses Epic EMR system
• Navy blue scrubs with matching jackets are required
• Expected to provide direct patient care across assigned units, adapting to a wide variety of patient populations and diagnosis types
• Orientation includes 1 shift with a preceptor for Med/Surg and 2 shifts for Stepdown
• Team includes clinical managers, resource nurses, and CNAs (no CNA support on nights for Med/Surg and limited after 11 pm for Stepdown)
• Must work holidays as per facility rotation
• Block scheduling and self-scheduling are permitted when unit needs are met
• Bipap, Cpap, and high-flow oxygen therapies are used and managed in collaboration with respiratory therapy
• IV support available from ICU for difficult sticks
• COVID patients are cohorted; must be comfortable working with both COVID and non-COVID populations simultaneously

Requirements

• Active PA or Compact RN license
• Minimum of 2 years RN experience
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; NIHSS also required for Stepdown
• Ability to interpret cardiac telemetry strips for Stepdown assignments
• Experience titrating drips including Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Heparin for Stepdown
• Comfortable providing care to COVID and palliative patients
• Passing EKG test required for Stepdown assignment
• Must not have worked at any WVU Medicine location within the last 2 years
• Cannot exceed one year cumulative experience as a traveler at WVU before a required 2-year break
• Local candidates within 50 miles are not eligible
