Job Description
American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for the Medical ICU, requiring MI RN license eligibility and at least one year of recent ICU experience.
Responsibilities
- Position is in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) with a mixed ICU and PCU patient population
- Typical patient diagnoses include COPD, encephalopathy, drug overdose, DKA, AKI, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, heart failure, and A-fib
- Nurse to patient ratios vary from 1:1 for high acuity (CRRT, cooling, vent) to 1:4 for lower acuity PCU/general medical patients
- Will use specialized equipment such as cooling machines, Bair Huggers, CRRT, ventilators, and will perform advanced procedures including A-line, CVC, trach, and chest tube placements
- Expected to work night shifts, three 12-hour shifts per week (19:00-07:00)
- Required to float to other ICU and Med Surg units as census dictates, with typical med-surg ratios of 1:5-7 patients per RN
- Scheduled to work every other weekend
- Duties involve managing both ICU and PCU level patients, including those with fluctuating acuity
- Agency RNs float in rotation with staff MICU nurses to med-surg units when required
- No requested time off allowed within the first two weeks; all RTO must be presented before offer
- First time travelers are welcome
- ICU physician may keep lower acuity patients in ICU, impacting assignments
- Typical caseload includes care of patients on ventilators and supporting advanced monitoring and procedures
Requirements
- Active MI RN license or eligibility with proof of application at consideration
- Current AHA BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale certifications
- Minimum of 1 year of recent ICU nursing experience
- Ability to interpret and manage cardiac dysrhythmias and multi-system organ failure
- Proficiency with emergency response and IV insulin protocols
- Experience in management of chronic/acute renal failure, CRRT, arterial lines, central lines, PICC lines, and blood product administration
- Experience with continuous IV sedation, emergency medication administration, and titrating cardiac and vasoactive drips
- Competence in neurological and acute stroke management
- Proficient in respiratory care including BiPAP, CPAP, care of ventilated patients, HFNC, ABG interpretation, and suctioning
- Comfortable with vented patients and med-surg float assignments
