Job Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a PCU Float Pool position requiring 2 years of PCU experience, with night shifts across multiple hospital campuses in the San Diego area.

Responsibilities

• Float pool position covering PCU/IMU units across four hospital campuses (La Jolla - two locations, Hillcrest, and La Mesa)
• Unit specialties include general medicine, surgical, neuro, oncology, cardiac, and orthopedics
• May float to the Emergency Department Inpatient overflow (EDIP) unit as needed
• May float down to Med/Surg when census allows
• Patient ratios: IMU 1:3, Telemetry 1:4, Med/Surg 1:5
• Charting system: Epic; medication dispensing via Pyxis
• Night shift, 3x12-hour shifts (19:00–07:00)
• Schedule is provided two weeks in advance on a 4-week rolling basis; no blocked or self-scheduling permitted
• RN is notified by phone 2 hours before each shift with the assigned campus location
• First-time travelers are welcome to apply
• Local candidates are accepted for this position
• No RTO permitted within the first 2 weeks of the assignment; all time-off requests must be submitted at the time of consideration and cannot be changed once submitted
• Candidates who have previously been employed by this health system must be approved before starting the assignment; candidates must have been gone for at least 1 year to return as a traveler
• A potential new cardiology/neuro unit on the East Campus may become active during the contract period; if so, the assigned RN may be primarily relocated to that unit

Requirements

• Active CA RN license required
• Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Minimum 2 years of PCU experience required
• IV start, telemetry monitoring, phlebotomy, and arterial line (A-line) experience required
• Cardiology and neuro skills preferred
• Must pass a pass/fail EKG exam (up to 3 attempts allowed)
• At least one supervisory, director, or manager reference from within the past year on the applicable unit is required
• A second professional reference within the past 2 years from a charge nurse, co-worker, or educator is acceptable
