Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Pediatric Psychiatric Unit position requiring at least 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience and an active ME or Compact RN license.

Responsibilities

  • Freestanding acute inpatient psychiatric facility with a contracted ER located 5 minutes away
  • Pediatric Psychiatric Unit serving patients ages 5–18; floating required between pediatric and adult units (ages 18+ through geriatric)
  • Pediatric diagnoses include Eating Disorders, Depression, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Gender Dysphoria
  • Adult diagnoses include Schizophrenia, MDD, Bipolar Disorder, Eating Disorders, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, and occasional Substance Use Disorder/CIWA cases (medically cleared)
  • All patients are admitted from an ED and medically cleared prior to arrival; lines, drains, and tubes are not typical
  • Both voluntary and involuntary admissions; no forensic patients or inmates
  • RN patient ratios: 1:5–6 on days, 1:13 on nights with nursing resource support
  • Psych Tech support: Peds (6 days / 2 nights), Adults (2 days / 2 nights)
  • Night shift: 7PM–7AM, 36 hours per week
  • Every other weekend rotation (Saturday and Sunday)
  • No on-call requirements
  • Holiday coverage required on a rotation basis
  • Charting via Cerner; Pyxis used for medication management
  • MOAB certification is obtained on-site during orientation and is not required prior to starting
  • Orientation: first week is Monday–Friday on day shift; second week transitions to contracted night shift schedule
  • Unit support includes a Nurse Supervisor (evenings/weekends), Nurse Manager (days), House Administrator (overnight/weekends), Charge Nurse, Psych Techs, contracted Phlebotomist, NP (on-site until 4PM, on-call overnight), Psychiatrist (daily rounds and on-call 12AM–6AM), and OT (8AM–4:30PM, 7 days/week)
  • Facility also offers specialized therapeutic programming including pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens
  • Seclusion rooms are available and used when clinically necessary
  • Security is on-site but does not respond to patient escalations; all unit staff (techs and nurses across all 6 units) participate in escalation response
  • Traveler may have the opportunity to serve as Charge Nurse, though it is not required
  • Up to 7 days of approved time off available; contract may need to be extended if shifts cannot be completed within a week
  • Scrub color: any solid color; must be professional
  • Free parking is available on-site
  • Heavy snow conditions should be expected during winter months
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Candidates living 100+ miles north of the facility may be considered on a case-by-case basis with individual AVP and VP of Nursing approval

Requirements

  • Active ME RN license or Compact RN license currently in hand
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Minimum 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience required
  • Pediatric behavioral health experience preferred; candidates without it may be considered with manager approval
  • Experience with de-escalation techniques and physical restraints (chemical restraints are not used)
  • Proficiency in medication passes and group facilitation
  • Permanent address must be 100+ miles south/southwest of the facility to be eligible
  • Must not have previously worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity
  • 2 professional references within the past year required, at least one from a supervisor, manager, or director (charge nurse acceptable; peer references not accepted)
  • Full SSN, Driver's License, and copies of all certifications required for consideration
  • Flu vaccination required for clearance to start (medical exemptions accepted on a case-by-case basis with a minimum 2-week review period)
