Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro ICU travel position at a Level 1 Trauma facility, requiring EVD experience and strong neuro assessment skills for a 13-week night shift assignment.
Details
- Acute care setting within a 32-bed Neuro ICU at a Level 1 Trauma facility that is home to a world-renowned neurological disease treatment and research institution
- Patient population includes critical care patients with neurological diagnoses, including craniotomies, brain tumor removals and ablations, brain biopsies, complex spine surgeries, and scoliosis repairs
- Patient ratio is 1:2; when floating to telemetry, ratio is 4:1
- Philips monitors and ventilators in use; RT and pharmacy available 24/7
- Charting is done via Cerner
- 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a), 4 weekend shifts per 4-week period, holidays worked per unit core staff rotation
- Travelers are first to float and may be floated to MS Tele/Tele floors
- Standby assignment is possible for scheduled shifts
- Floor-specific orientation consists of 2 shifts on the unit
Requirements
- Active AZ or Compact (NLC) RN license required — must be active at time of consideration, pending licenses not accepted
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required — pending certifications not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience in a large hospital (450+ beds) required
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- EVD (external ventricular drain) experience required
- Strong neuro assessment skills and ICP monitoring experience required
- 3–6 months of prior travel nursing experience required
- Candidate must reside at least 50 miles from the facility (driver's license used to verify permanent address)
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years — both must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Copy of driver's license required for consideration
Additional Information
- Provide critical care nursing to neurological patients, including ICP monitoring, EVD management, and neurological assessments
- A pass/fail Relias Dysrhythmia (DYS) exam must be completed and passed prior to offer confirmation; candidates have 2 attempts
- On Day 1 of orientation, nurses complete a pass/fail sterile technique skills test covering Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes — a study guide is provided
- All RNs are required to complete a SIMs Lab assessment for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes; SIMs Lab is pass/fail and nurses have been released for breaking sterile field
- Additional orientation topics include lifts, restraints, and wound care (educational only, as policies and equipment vary by facility)
- Scrub color is steel grey for Neuro floors
- Natural hair color and no facial piercings are required; men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year are not eligible — candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
- A charge nurse is present on the unit and does not take a patient assignment
