Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Medical Oncology PCU (Progressive Care Unit) position requiring high-acuity PCU experience and telemetry skills, with oncology experience preferred but not required.
Details
- 36-bed Oncology Telemetry unit with over 24 beds dedicated to PCU-level care, located within a hospital cancer center
- Patient population includes solid tumor, orthopedic oncology, and thoracic oncology diagnoses
- PCU nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3; Med/Surg Telemetry ratio is 1:4-5
- Unit uses GE B450 telemetry monitors, Alaris pumps, Stryker beds, bladder scanners, PCA pumps, and continuous bladder irrigation equipment
- Night shift position: 3x12-hour shifts, 19:00–07:30
- Day/night rotating contracts may also be available; shift assignments are reviewed every 4-week scheduling period based on staffing needs
- Self-scheduling: candidates submit preferred schedule requests prior to final schedule posting
- Floating required within units of equivalent or lower acuity
- Pediatric patients are occasionally present on the unit but are extremely rare and primarily cared for by permanent staff — pediatric experience is not required
Requirements
- Active OH or Compact RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS (BCLS), ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum of 2 years high-acuity PCU experience required
- Strong telemetry skills required, including dysrhythmia interpretation
- Required clinical skills: feeding tube care and management, accessing ports, blood product administration, central/PICC/peripheral line care and management, IV starts, heparin protocols, non-titrating cardiac drips, titration of cardiac drips, PCA management, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BiPAP, HFNC, ABG interpretation, nasal cannula, and tracheostomy management
- 2 years of oncology experience preferred but not required
- Previous travel experience preferred
Additional Information
- Strong emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
- Orientation consists of week one Monday–Friday dayshift, followed by a second week of 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- Preferred skills include: management of dysrhythmias, IV insulin protocols, insulin drip titration, phlebotomy, chemotherapy administration and monitoring, wound care/wound vac, arterial line management, surgical drains, and non-invasive airway management
- No break required between assignments when changing representation at this health system (except for Sterile Processing Techs, who require a 30-day break)
- 2 professional references from a supervisor within the past 2 years required for consideration
- Full 7-year work history with all gaps explained required for consideration
- All time-off and scheduling requests must be disclosed at the time of initial consideration

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
